Avaaz has become a Recognized Force around the World

Avazz is an online activist network that includes members worldwide. The United States based organization, launched in early 2007 and works to promote activism. The group focuses on issues such as poverty and conflict, corruption, animal rights, human rights and climate change. The organization is considered to be one of the most powerful and largest online activist network.

The word avaaz means “voice” in several different languages including Asian, Middle Eastern and European. The main mission of the group was to organize worldwide citizens and work together to close the gap between the world we all live in and the world we want. Avaaz works to empower citizens to take action on issues important to them and to find a network of people with similar thoughts.

The group works in 15 different languages to form an inclusive group of members without language becoming a barrier. There are thousands of volunteers that make up the group and along with a core team on six continents, the Avaaz community is extensive in personality, character and commitment. The organization takes action on the issues important to them in the form of circulating and signing petitions, lobbying government officials, writing letters and sending emails and organizing protests and events. The organization makes sure its members, as well as those who have an interest in an issue are always informed about the issues at hand.

The organization’s co-founders are Res Publica and MoveOn.org. Res Publica dedicates itself to promoting good governance, deliberate democracy and civic pride and virtue. MoveOn is a non-profit organization that is an advocate for public policy. Another founding and supportive partner is the Service Employees International.

The President and Executive Director for the organization is Ricken Patel. He is a Canadian born gentleman who studied politics, philosophy and economics at Balliol College, Oxford University. He earned a Master’s Degree in Public Policy from Harvard University. He took on the International Crisis Group where he learned how to bring rebel forces to the negotiation table.
